Should I Exfoliate Before, During, or After Cleansing?
With so many different skincare products to choose from, designing an effective skincare routine can sometimes seem daunting. Once you’ve picked out the right products you want to integrate from the list above, make sure you’re choosing the right exfoliant for you…
Exfoliation can be particularly confusing because:
- Some cleansers already contain exfoliating ingredients.
- Cleansing and exfoliating both remove unwanted substances from your skin.
Exfoliating products offer two key benefits when integrated properly into a skincare routine:
- They remove dead skin cells.
- They help the active ingredients in leave-on skincare to penetrate more effectively.
A physical exfoliant gently abrades the skin and rubs away dead cells with grains, salts, or microspheres like micronised Pine Bark. Using a physical exfoliant without first removing your makeup could actually encourage cosmetics to penetrate more deeply into your skin. So you should cleanse your skin first before using an exfoliant.
Whereas the key benefits of a cleansing product are to:
- Remove makeup
- Remove excess sebum
- Provide extremely mild exfoliation of already loosened cells
Should I use an exfoliator before or after cleansing?
You should absolutely use an exfoliator after cleansing and never before. Cleansing directly afterwards would wash the exfoliant from your skin before it has a chance to work. The biggest risk would be to your wallet, as you’d be wasting money by adopting this skincare strategy.
Should You Exfoliate Your Skin Daily?
NO! “Exfoliating every day can strip the skin of its natural oils, which can cause breakouts,” says our skin specialist. “It can also cause irritation because you’re removing the top layer of skin before it can heal.”
“Over time, it can actually thin the skin and cause it to wrinkle more easily. Plus, the skin is a smart organ and sheds dead skin cells on its own; if we exfoliate too often, it can actually slow cell turnover.” “Over-exfoliating can cause chronic skin irritation and inflammation, which can lead to accelerated aging,”.
How Often Should You Exfoliate?
Two to three times a week for normal and combination skin, and once a week for sensitive skin. (As a refresher, combination skin is oily through the T-zone with dry cheeks, normal skin has the same amount of oil throughout, and sensitive skin gets red and irritated easily.) Now you can get away with using the Nourishing Cream Cleanser Daily if you have oily skin and you need to keep you skin from becoming too oily.
What exfoliants should you use if you have normal or combination skin?
A versatile exfoliant that is both mechanical (removes dead skin cells through friction) and (dissolves dead skin cells using enzymes or acids) is best. It allows you to scrub your problem (oilier) areas and be more gentle with the drier parts of your face. The key is to look for an exfoliant that also contains calming properties to reduce inflammation from breakouts. We like the Nourishing Cream Cleanser, which contains micronised pine bark as an exfoliant as it easily sloughs away dead skin cells, while Camellia and lavender gently purify pores. Gently Massage into the skin using a circular motion, working gently over the sensitive areas. Rinse thoroughly pat dry, ah nice!
The Dragon’s Blood Nourishing Milk Cleanser – thoroughly cleansing the skin removing dirt, impurities and surface oils leaving it looking and feeling fresh and revitalised. The bio-active ingredients in the Dragon’s Blood Cleansing Milk removes embedded cellular debris, giving the skin a nutrient-rich metabolic boost. The Boswellia Carterii (Frankincense) Oil, Croton Lechleri Resin (Dragons Blood) Extract, Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract softens and hydrates the skin, while it thoroughly cleanses and promotes the exfoliation process. An awesome product for daily use.
What should you use after you exfoliate?
A good hydrating serum (we like the Vitamin C Collagen Booster Serum from MYOS SKINCARE) “to really soothe and penetrate the skin right after exfoliation (the Vitamin AB Night Serum) so the skin gets an instant vitamin boost.” If you are in need of hydration more than a radiance boost, follow up with the Hydrating Gel Facial Serum or the ultimate Hydrator SERUMAX.
Then you can use a good moisturiser “to replace any lost oils from the exfoliation process.” Day options are Nourishing Day Cream or at night Rejuvenating Night Cream.
